Tottenham may be without Micky Van de Ven until after the international break, but the team could be strengthened by the return of captain Son Heung-min for their Premier League match against Aston Villa.
Spurs recently secured a spot in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals by handing Manchester City their first defeat of the season with a 2-1 victory. However, the win was dampened when Van de Ven had to leave the field in tears due to a hamstring injury.
The center-back dealt with a similar hamstring issue last season that sidelined him for two months, but manager Ange Postecoglou noted this injury appears to be just a “strain” and expressed hope that it’s not as severe. Additionally, Cristian Romero was taken off as a precaution after a minor knock, while Timo Werner remains uncertain for Sunday’s match against fourth-placed Villa.
Son, who has missed Spurs' last three games due to “soreness” that flared up after the win over West Ham, has resumed training and could be fit to play. “Micky is the main one,” Postecoglou explained when discussing team news. “He has strained a hamstring but it is not too serious. After the international break for him. The other one was Romero and Werner but they still have a chance for the weekend. Sonny trained today and if he gets through tomorrow should be okay.”
Tottenham will face Galatasaray in the Europa League on Thursday and then meet Ipswich Town the following Sunday before the November international break, which allows Van de Ven some time to recover before the match against Manchester City on November 23. During the win over City, Spurs finished with Radu Dragusin and Ben Davies in central defense, and Postecoglou may have to rely on this pairing again if Romero and Van de Ven are both unavailable.
Aston Villa comes into the match having won their last two league visits to Tottenham, with Unai Emery’s squad currently sitting five points ahead of Spurs.
