Ange Postecoglou has a larger squad available for Thursday's Europa League game against Qarabag, which could provide opportunities for some of the academy players.
Ange Postecoglou has 12 bench spots to fill for Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa League match against Qarabag on Thursday, which could give some young players a chance.
For this first group stage match of the European campaign, Postecoglou needs to name a 23-player matchday squad. However, both Wilson Odobert and Richarlison are sidelined with injuries, while Djed Spence is ineligible for the group stages, as Postecoglou didn’t have room to include him without dropping another player, such as goalkeeper Fraser Forster, who was considered at the time.
Spurs were only able to register 23 senior players for the Europa League due to having just two senior club-trained players available, leaving two spots unfilled. Additionally, Cristian Romero is suspended for Thursday’s game because of the red card he received two seasons ago in Tottenham’s last European appearance against AC Milan in the Champions League.
With Richarlison, Odobert, Spence, and Romero unavailable, Spurs are left with just 20 registered senior players to choose from. Although it’s unlikely Postecoglou will name all four of his goalkeepers in the matchday squad, as having three on the bench seems excessive, it remains a slight possibility.
As long as there are no further injuries from the weekend, this opens up four or five bench spots for Tottenham’s academy players, who are registered on a separate UEFA B list. Five potential candidates could step up, with more clarity expected after Wednesday’s open training session that the media can attend.
