Ange Postecoglou: "It was one of those games."

Tottenham Hotspur lost to Crystal Palace today, and after the match, Ange Postecoglou reflected on what went wrong for his team at Selhurst Park.

Spurs came into the game with high confidence following a strong win over West Ham last weekend and a Europa League victory midweek. Fans were optimistic, especially given Palace’s winless record in their first eight league matches. However, Tottenham struggled to find control and were outplayed from start to finish.

Jean-Philippe Mateta’s first-half goal was enough to secure the win for Palace, and Tottenham rarely looked like they would leave with any points. Despite having more possession and completing more passes, Spurs managed only three shots on target compared to Palace’s six.

Postecoglou, speaking to the BBC, described the match as filled with interruptions and physical battles, most of which Palace won.

“There was a lot of disruption, and it was hard to get any flow going. They outplayed us,” he said. “It became the type of game they were comfortable with, and we should have handled it better. Conceding the goal was poor and not related to our passing game—it was just one of those things.”

When asked about his and the fans' reaction, Postecoglou added, “I’m certainly not happy, so I doubt the players are either. And if the fans were disappointed, that’s fair.”

He later commented (via Football London), “It was a game that became, as expected, a bit of a scrappy battle with frequent stops and pauses. We didn’t adapt well at all, and they handled it better than we did.”
