Ange Postecoglou has given an optimistic update on Cristian Romero’s chances of playing in the upcoming match against Chelsea. Tottenham suffered a major setback in their 1-0 loss to Bournemouth when Ben Davies sustained a hamstring injury, adding to their defensive woes with Romero and Micky van de Ven already sidelined. This leaves Spurs potentially heading into Sunday’s London derby with Radu Dragusin as their only fully fit center-back.

If that scenario unfolds, Postecoglou might have to rely on the inexperienced Archie Gray to start in central defense—a tough situation for the team. However, Postecoglou has not ruled out Romero’s involvement, though he acknowledged the defender isn’t yet fully fit.

Speaking to Football.London, Postecoglou said, “He hasn’t been able to feel 100%, but we’re getting closer, so there’s light at the end of the tunnel. The priority is that he feels comfortable, so hopefully, he’ll be available soon.”

When asked if he’d consider playing Romero even if he isn’t fully recovered, Postecoglou responded, “I don’t think I need to ask him. Cuti’s the kind of guy who, if he thinks he can help us, will get out there. I won’t have to twist his arm.”

While Gray shows promise, relying on him in such a high-stakes game against a strong Chelsea attack would be a huge challenge for the young player. Tottenham’s hopes of securing a result may hinge on Romero’s presence, though Postecoglou will need to carefully weigh the risks of rushing him back and potentially worsening his injury.
